Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP)

The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) will begin implementing the Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) effective September 4, 2018.

What this means is that ANY student wanting to enroll in a driver's education course on or after September 4, 2018, MUST go to a DMV and get a TIP before attending the driver's education class. The student must be at least 14 years 9 months to be issued a TIP. Adults are also mandated to obtain a TIP before attending class.

Even though you have already enrolled in a driving class with me, you will still need to go to the DMV on or after September 4, 2018. The DMV will issue you a TIP which must be presented to us on the day of registration.

The cost of the TIP from the DMV is $32.25 with a possible service fee up to $6.00. Upon successful completion of the driver's education course, the student will return to the DMV to convert the TIP to a Learner's Permit or Full License. There is NO additional cost to convert from the TIP to the permit or license.

Items to Bring to the Office of Motor Vehicles to obtain a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) for Driver's Education: Minor Students (14 years 9 months through 17 years old)

Adult Students (18 years old and older)
*Note: If an adult has a valid Louisiana State ID already issued and their Social Security Number is in OMV’s system, then only the ID and Proof of Residency is needed.
